In Canada, the number of hate crimes against Muslims is on the rise. This is revealed by a report from the agency of the Canadian federal government.

Between 2020 and 2022, the number of hate crimes and offenses against Muslims increased by 71%, according to a Statistics Canada report released on August 2. Thus, hate attacks have increased from 84 in 2020 to 144 in 2021. An increase compared to 2019 when the number of hate crimes against Muslims reported in the country stood at 182.

In a Statistics Canada commentary quoted by MEE, it is stated that “it is not possible to link hate incidents and crimes reported by the police to particular events, but the media and public discourse can help to increase awareness of the phenomenon that arouses negative reactions from people with a hateful attitude”.

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) reacted in a post on Twitter to the publication of the report by the Canadian federal government agency. “We lost Canadian Muslims to hate in 2021. These numbers don’t tell the whole story either – we know the number of hate crimes far exceeds what appears in hate crime statistics,” said he declared.
